Local legends: The Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in 2002 in Sheffield, England. The band is composed of lead vocalist and guitarist Alex Turner, drummer Matt Helders, and bassist Nick O’Malley, as well as Jamie Cook on guitar and keyboards.

Over the past two decades, the Arctic Monkeys have become one of the most successful and influential bands in the UK and beyond, with a devoted fan base and a string of critically acclaimed albums.

The Arctic Monkeys got their start in 2002, when Turner and Helders, who were both just 16 years old at the time, decided to start a band. The two friends were joined by guitarist Jamie Cook and bassist Andy Nicholson, and the Arctic Monkeys were born.

The band’s debut single, “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor“, was released in 2005 and became an instant hit, reaching number one on the UK charts. This was followed by the release of their debut album, “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not“, which became the fastest-selling debut album in British history.

Over the following years, the Arctic Monkeys released a string of successful albums, including “Favourite Worst Nightmare” (2007), “Humbug” (2009), and “Suck It and See” (2011). The band’s music has evolved over the years, moving from their early garage rock sound to a more experimental and indie rock style.

In 2018, the Arctic Monkeys released their sixth studio album, “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino“, which received widespread praise from critics and fans alike. The band continues to tour and record music, and remains one of the most popular and respected rock bands of their generation.
