A former industrial district just north of the city centre, on a man-made island between the River Don and a mill goit cut in the twelfth century to serve the town corn mill. For two centuries it was full of steelworks and workshops. Since the 1990s it has become Sheffield's best-known regeneration story, home to the Kelham Island Museum, the Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern pubs, breweries, Peddler Market, restaurants and converted works turned into flats. The Sunday Times named it one of the best places to live in Britain more than once.
