People searching for parkour in Sheffield are often looking for one of two things: a formal paid class, or a free local community where they can meet people who already train. Sheffield Parkour and Freerunning is the second one: an open community built around outdoor training, shared knowledge and welcoming complete beginners.
The group has trained around Sheffield and South Yorkshire since 2005. Its regular community sessions are free, require no membership or booking, and give you a much calmer first step than trying to copy a rooftop video on your own.
Free Sheffield parkour sessions at a glance
- Tuesday and Thursday, 6pm: the main training sessions at Endcliffe Parkour Park.
- Saturday, 1.30pm: community training at Northumberland Road Courtyard, S10 2TT.
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6pm: relaxed social sessions at Endcliffe Parkour Park.
- Cost: free.
- Booking: not required for the open community sessions.
- Experience: beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome.
Outdoor times can change with the weather or season. Check the official sessions page and community Discord before travelling, especially if conditions are poor.

What parkour actually involves
Parkour is the practice of moving through an environment by running, balancing, jumping, climbing and vaulting. The aim is not to begin with the biggest possible gap. Good training builds control, useful strength and confidence by repeating movements at a level you can manage.
Freerunning grew from the same roots but makes more space for expressive movement, tricks and acrobatics. You may see both at a Sheffield session, but nobody expects a beginner to arrive with a flip. Learning how to land, balance and judge an obstacle is a much more useful place to start.
What happens at a first session?
Turn up, introduce yourself and say that it is your first time. The community sessions are social rather than a formal paid course, but experienced people can point you towards simple movements and safer progressions. You can watch for a while, ask questions and take breaks. There is no need to prove that you belong by attempting something beyond your confidence.
Endcliffe’s purpose-built parkour area has bars, walls and platforms, which makes it possible to practise one idea at several heights. Northumberland Road offers a different city-centre training environment. The official Sheffield parkour spot map covers more places, but a community session is the best introduction before exploring alone.
What to wear and bring
- Comfortable clothes that let you move freely.
- Trainers with dependable grip.
- Water and a warm layer for after training.
- Any medication you normally carry for exercise.
- A willingness to begin small and listen to your body.
You do not need specialist shoes, gloves or expensive equipment for a first visit. Ordinary practical clothing is enough. Avoid anything that restricts movement or can catch easily on an obstacle.
Training sensibly outdoors
Parkour carries risk, as any active sport does, but sensible practice looks very different from highlight clips. Check a surface before using it, respect wet or icy conditions and learn a movement close to the ground before increasing height or distance. Do not train on private property where access is not allowed, and give other people room to use public space.
Under-18s should attend with a parent or guardian, or contact the community through Discord first. Anyone returning from injury or managing a health condition should choose an appropriate pace and seek professional advice where needed.
Make a Sheffield day of it
Endcliffe Park connects into the Porter Valley, so a session can sit alongside an easy walk rather than needing to become a full sporting mission. Browse more free things to do in Sheffield, check outdoor conditions before setting off and use the Sheffield sport hub for fixtures, teams and places to get active.
The free Thursday meetup in Endcliffe Park is listed on Sheffield Events: Sheffield Parkour & Freerunning. Start with the official schedule, turn up ready to learn and let the first achievement be simply joining in.
