Sheffield's main pedestrian shopping street, running from the Town Hall and the Peace Gardens down towards High Street and the cathedral. It has been the centre of the city's retail life since the Victorian period, and hosts the Christmas Market every winter. The name is old, recorded by the sixteenth century, and means roughly the far street or road.
