The Crucible Theatre on Tudor Square, opened in 1971 with a thrust stage where the audience sits on three sides. It is Sheffield Theatres' main house and, since 1977, the home of the World Snooker Championship each spring, which is how most of the world knows it. Not to be confused with crucible steel, the process that gave it its name.
