Crucible steel

The process invented in Sheffield around 1740 by the clockmaker Benjamin Huntsman, who melted blister steel in clay crucibles to produce a uniform, high-quality steel for springs and tools. It made Sheffield the steel capital of the world for the next 150 years and gave the Crucible Theatre its name.
