Stainless steel

Rust-resistant chromium steel, first produced as a commercial alloy in Sheffield in 1913 by Harry Brearley at the Brown Firth research laboratories while looking for a better steel for gun barrels. He called it rustless steel. It transformed cutlery, and Sheffield still markets itself as the home of stainless.
