The women who polished finished cutlery and silverware on buffing wheels, one of the dirtiest and best-known jobs in the Sheffield trades. Wrapped in brown paper aprons and headscarves against the grease and dust, they were famous for their toughness and their singing. Sheffield's Women of Steel statue in Barker's Pool honours the women who worked the steelworks in the two world wars.
