Sheffield Assay Office

One of the UK's four assay offices, established by Act of Parliament in 1773 to hallmark silver made in Sheffield, and still operating from Hillsborough. Its mark was a crown until 1975 and has been a rose since. Sheffield plate, being fused rather than solid, was never hallmarked.
