The German bombing raids of 12 and 15 December 1940, which killed around 660 people, destroyed much of the Moor, High Street and Angel Street, and hit the Marples Hotel where about 70 died in the cellar. The steelworks, the intended targets, were largely missed on the first night. Much of the post-war city centre was rebuilt on the bomb sites.
