Sheffield City Battalion

The 12th (Service) Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, a First World War pals battalion raised in the city in 1914 and trained at Redmires. It was cut to pieces on the first day of the Somme, 1 July 1916, at Serre, with over 500 casualties in the morning. The memorial park at Serre is twinned with the city.
