The heavy engineering firm on Brightside Lane in the Lower Don Valley, descended from the Vickers works, which casts and forges some of the largest steel components in the world for nuclear, defence and power stations. It was bought outright by the Ministry of Defence in 2021 to secure supplies for the submarine programme.
