A way of fusing a thin layer of silver onto copper so the sheet could be worked like solid silver, discovered by the Sheffield cutler Thomas Boulsover around 1743. It made candlesticks, teapots and tableware affordable for a century until electroplating replaced it in the 1840s. Genuine Old Sheffield Plate is now collected.
