A piece of nineteenth-century Sheffield folklore placed a “Hell Hole”-an entrance to the lower world-somewhere between Neepsend and Rutland Road.
The surviving description does not identify a dependable modern site, and the landscape has changed considerably. The map therefore marks the wider Neepsend area and must not be read as a claim about a particular property or opening in the ground.
