The short version: I am not in the data business. Nothing here is sold, nothing is shared with advertisers, and there is no profile being built about you. What follows is what actually runs on the site, checked rather than copied from a template.
Sheffield Events is run by one person, Shane Rounce, in Sheffield. You can reach me through the contact page.
Reading the site
You do not need an account to read anything here, and most people never make one.
Three things measure visits. Google Analytics counts pages and where people arrived from. Microsoft Clarity records how pages are used, which includes session replays of mouse movement, scrolling and clicks on this site. Jetpack Stats gives a simple daily count. Cloudflare sits in front of the site and logs requests to keep it up and to block attacks.
I use those to find out which parts of the site people cannot make sense of, and that is all. I do not look anybody up individually, and none of them are wired to advertising here.
None of the three loads until you have answered the cookie banner, and if you reject them they are never fetched. If your browser sends Do Not Track we treat that as a refusal and do not ask. The full list of what is stored, by whom and for how long, is on the cookies page, generated from the same list the banner uses.
Cookies
The cookies on this site fall into three groups: the ones that make it work, such as remembering your light or dark theme and keeping you logged in; the analytics ones described above; and the one the cookie banner itself sets to remember your answer. You can change your choice at any time from the banner, and clearing your browser data clears the lot.
Cookies in use
The detailed list below is generated from the site’s current cookie register. It lives here, rather than being repeated invisibly in the HTML of every page.

If you make an account
An account stores your email address, your username, whatever you choose to put in your profile, and the things you save: your plans, the events you follow, the areas you follow. It is there so the site can remember you, and for nothing else.
Members can message each other privately. Those messages sit in the site database. I can technically read them, the same way anybody running a server can, and I do not, except where I am chasing abuse that has been reported to me.
Registration and comment spam is filtered by Akismet, which means the submission is checked by their service. Emails from the site go out through Amazon SES.
If you send me something
The contact form and the event submission form keep what you send, including your email address, so I can reply and so I have a record of who asked for a listing. If you submit an event, the listing itself is public. Your email address is not.
What I do not do
- I do not sell or rent anything about you to anybody.
- There are no advertising trackers and no retargeting pixels.
- There is no newsletter that you did not ask for.
- I do not try to work out who you are from your reading.
Your rights, in plain words
You can ask me what the site holds about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and I will do it. Deleting an account removes the profile, the saved plans and the follows. Write through the contact page and say what you want, and you do not have to give a reason.
Under UK data protection law I am the controller for this site. If I ever get something badly wrong and we cannot sort it between us, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Other people’s sites
Listings link out to ticket sellers, venues and organisers, and the site embeds maps, radio streams and the occasional video. Once you follow a link or press play, you are on their terms and not mine.
If anything here worries you or looks wrong, ask. I would rather explain it than have you guess.
