Sheffield History

Sheffield has been making things, and arguing about things, for a very long time. This is the part of the site that looks backwards: who was born here, what was photographed here, what was written about here and what is still standing.

None of it is written by us. It is pulled from the places that already keep this record properly: Wikidata and Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, Open Library, the V&A, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, Historic England, Open Plaques and the National Library of Scotland's scanned Ordnance Survey sheets. We just put it in one place and say where every line came from.

It updates on its own. The birthdays change daily, the most read Sheffield articles change weekly, and the rest changes whenever the archives do. If something looks wrong, it is almost certainly wrong at the source, and the credit line under each block tells you where to go and fix it.

  • 1,585 people from Sheffield have a Wikidata record.
  • 402 digitised items about Sheffield are in the Internet Archive.
  • 4,449 buildings and monuments around Sheffield are listed by Historic England.
