Sheffield Events is a free guide to what is happening in this city, and a fair bit more besides. It has been going for about ten years. This page is the map of it: what is here, and where to find it.
It is a personal project rather than a company, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to join. The about page explains why it exists.
What is on
What’s On is the main listing, and you can narrow it to a day, an area, a category or to free events only. There are standing pages for today, this week and this weekend, a gig guide for live music, and free things to do for the weeks when money is the problem.
Every event page tries to answer the questions you have before you commit: the time, the venue, the price, the forecast for when it starts, when it gets dark, which buses are heading that way, where to park or lock a bike, and what else is on nearby. Classes covers the things that run every week rather than once, and Performers lists the acts playing here, A to Z.
Places and areas
There are pages for 147 Sheffield neighbourhoods, each one gathering what is around you there: events, venues, charities, GPs and pharmacies, schools, house prices, broadband, and what the Census says about who lives in it. There is also a scorecard that ranks every area on six things, explained on the area finder guide.
The live map puts the city on one screen: buses and trams moving right now, rain radar, weather warnings, river levels, air quality, listed buildings, blue plaques, planning applications, Victorian maps, and the practical things nobody lists anywhere sensible, like public toilets, drinking water, defibrillators, cycle parking and chargers.
The directory is the venues, promoters, organisers and businesses behind the listings. Parks and routes covers the green third of the city, and Sport follows the local teams and their fixtures.
Help, and the useful boring stuff
Help near you lists foodbanks, community kitchens, warm spaces, advice drop-ins, GPs, dentists, pharmacies and libraries with their opening times. It is meant for ordinary weeks as much as bad ones. Charities is searchable by cause and by who they help, Volunteering is the way in if you have time to give, and Housing and Students carry the numbers behind renting here.
Jobs lists local vacancies, Market is for buying and selling between members, and the noticeboard is where community notices go.
Reading and listening
The Sheffield Story collects the history: who was born here, old photographs and films, museum objects, Victorian maps and blue plaques. News and Articles carry local stories and guides, Reviews are from the people who were there, Radio plays the local stations, and the glossary explains the words, because nobody should feel like an outsider for not knowing what a gennel is.
It is all open
Everything the site gathers comes from public data, credited to its source and refreshed on a schedule. You can see every source with its licence, read the open data guide and take the data back out again through the free API on the developers page.
If you run something
Add it. It is free, it always will be, and it takes a couple of minutes. If something here is wrong, tell me and I will fix it.
