Nether Edge and Sharrow, Sheffield: a local guide to the market, the festival and what is on

Part of our series on Sheffield’s best neighbourhoods, which started when Time Out named Crookes one of the UK’s coolest. We think Nether Edge and Sharrow deserve a mention too.

Nether Edge is the leafy Victorian suburb a mile and a half south-west of Sheffield city centre, between Sharrow and the bottom of Ecclesall Road. It is known for its tree-lined streets of stone villas, for the Nether Edge Farmers Market that takes over Nether Edge Road several times a year, and for the volunteer-run Nether Edge Festival, which fills the halls, churches and gardens with a fortnight of gigs, talks, walks and open studios. Abbeydale Road, with its antiques shops and the Abbeydale Picture House, is a few minutes’ walk to the east. This guide covers the market and festival, how to get there, and the events going on in the area right now, taken from the live listings. For the boundary, the venues and the open data on the area, see the Nether Edge area page.

The market

The Nether Edge Farmers Market is run by the Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group, a residents’ group, on Nether Edge Road by the shops. It is a proper farmers market, with producers from the Peak District and South Yorkshire, bread, cheese, meat, plants and hot food, and it is free to walk round. The Christmas edition this year is on Sunday 29 November 2026 from 11am. Market days are busy, the road closes to traffic and parking is the usual Nether Edge problem, so walk, cycle or take the bus along Abbeydale Road or Ecclesall Road and walk down.

The festival

The Nether Edge Festival is volunteer-run and spread across the suburb, and past programmes have included concerts in the churches, talks and quizzes in the halls, a beer festival, walks, open gardens and a street party. Festival events are listed here as they are announced; follow the Nether Edge area tag to catch them. The 2027 programme is not published yet.

Next door: Abbeydale Road and Sharrow

Abbeydale Road is the long road of antiques shops, cafes, restaurants and bars that runs along the eastern edge of Nether Edge, and the Abbeydale Picture House is its landmark, a 1920 cinema now used for gigs, markets and film. We have a separate Abbeydale Road and Sharrow Vale guide. North of that is Sharrow, with London Road’s restaurants and Mount Pleasant Park, where the Sharrow Festival takes place in summer. events/whats-on/christmas-fayre-at-kenwood-hall-2026-11-05/”>Christmas fayre and other public events through the year.

The General Cemetery

On the Sharrow side, the Sheffield General Cemetery is one of the most atmospheric places in the city. It opened in 1836, climbs the hillside above the Porter Brook, and is now a listed historic park full of Victorian monuments, wildflowers and woodland paths, with the old Nonconformist chapel near the top. A volunteer trust looks after it, runs guided tours and holds events through the year, and it is a lovely, quiet walk between Ecclesall Road and Nether Edge in any season.

Getting there

Nether Edge has no tram. The buses along Abbeydale Road and Ecclesall Road both pass within a ten-minute walk, and from the city centre it is a 35-minute walk up through Sharrow. It is hilly: Nether Edge Road climbs steadily from Abbeydale Road, which matters if you are pushing a buggy home from the market.
