Sheffield General Cemetery Trust plans a Remembrance Sunday military tour for Sunday 8 November 2026 at 10.30am. The guided walk is free, with donations welcome, but tickets must be booked online and are not available on the door. The route pauses for a two-minute silence at the cemetery’s War Memorial. If you want a Sheffield way to mark the day through local lives and records, this is one to consider.

A place to remember particular people

Remembrance can become a list of dates and totals. A cemetery walk changes the scale. The Trust says its tour explores people connected with the site who died or were wounded in the World Wars and later conflicts. It also points visitors towards A Life Too Soon Done, a book about men associated with the cemetery who lost their lives in the First World War. The value is in names and stories, rather than treating the place as a backdrop.

The walk is not a general spooky tour. Sheffield General Cemetery has plenty of architectural and social history, but this event has a specific purpose and a moment of silence. Give that purpose room. If you bring a child, the organiser says it is aimed at adults and more suitable for over-11s; all children must be accompanied.

Booking and the route

The Trust's event page says to meet at the Gatehouse on Cemetery Avenue, S11 8NT. It warns that the historic landscape includes uneven paths and steps. Sensible footwear matters more than dressing for a city-centre pavement. Ask the organiser in advance if you need a particular route or support. The event page carries the current booking link and contact details.

Dogs are welcome on leads. The Trust says light refreshments will follow in the Samuel Worth Chapel. Keep the time after the walk free if you would like to stay and speak to the people who care for the cemetery. The walk itself begins at 10.30am, but check your booking confirmation for arrival instructions and any change to the meeting point.

Why the cemetery matters beyond one day

The General Cemetery is a distinctive piece of Sheffield’s built and social history. Its memorials record industry, religion, class, family and migration as well as war. A guided event offers context that is easy to miss if you visit alone. It can also lead you back for a different walk, with another question in mind, after Remembrance Sunday.

Please treat the memorials and the people visiting them with care. Stay on public paths, follow the guide and do not turn someone else’s act of remembrance into a photo opportunity. If you take pictures, avoid interrupting the silence and ask before photographing other visitors.

For a wider day in this part of the city, our free museums and libraries guide and what's on calendar can help, but keep the walk as the fixed point. The organiser's page is the source for the date, cost, age guidance and access note. Check it again before travelling.

The cemetery is also a place people use quietly outside organised events. That is different from joining a tour led by the Trust. If the event is full, do not improvise the same route behind the group. Choose another day, read the Trust’s visitor guidance and give anyone there to remember a relative the space they need. A thoughtful visit does not depend on a guide being available.

If you cannot make this guided date, use the Trust’s own programme to find another visit rather than following an old ticket link. Historic ground changes with the weather, and a route that works for one group may not suit everyone. Read each walk’s access notes afresh.
