In 1875 a crowd gathered at Barker’s Pool to watch what was being called the ghost of an apprentice: a glowing figure apparently moving in an upstairs window.
A police officer examined the scene and concluded that light was reflecting from material moving at the window. Once the window was secured, the figure disappeared. The episode is useful precisely because the contemporary “ghost” came with a reported explanation, showing how spectacle, rumour and a busy city-centre crowd could build a haunting in a single evening.
