The Campo Lane Ghost

The Campo Lane ghost is documented as a historical news story, which is different from saying that its supernatural explanation was true. Research by Sheffield folklorist David Clarke traces the case through nineteenth-century Sheffield newspaper reports.

The story was linked with the death of a middle-aged woman in early 1855. Contemporary and later reporting mixed personal testimony, religious interpretation, rumour and scepticism. A Sheffield Telegraph retrospective published at Halloween in 1876 described the supposed presence as a hobgoblin or “Old Nick” associated with a cellar.

The precise nineteenth-century property is not presented as a confirmed modern address, so the map shows Campo Lane approximately. The evidence label means the reports themselves are documented; it does not authenticate a ghost.
