Local folklore19th century or earlier
Across northern English folklore, Gabriel Hounds were supernatural dogs whose cries in the sky carried an omen. A Sheffield-area tradition places them over Stannington, where hearing the phantom pack was said to foretell a death.
Bird calls and other night sounds have often contributed to wild-hunt traditions. This is a place-linked folklore record rather than a sighting at one exact address, so its pin marks Stannington only approximately.
