Local folklore1840
A historical tradition dated to 1840 says that Norton’s parish clerk and an apprentice fled after seeing a woman watching while the organ was played at dusk. The pair were said to have vowed not to play in the evening again.
A separate local tale imagines a tunnel from the church to Beauchief Abbey and a treasure that could only be recovered with an elaborately prepared white horse. We present these as folklore attached to a real church, not as directions to search for a tunnel or treasure.
