Stories began circulating while the Stocksbridge Bypass was under construction in 1987. Security guards reported children near a pylon and later accounts described a hooded or monk-like figure around Pea Royd Bridge. Police officers interviewed for television in the 1990s also described an unexplained experience.
Folklorist David Clarke describes the bypass as living folklore: repeated reporting, television and later ghost hunts have all shaped what people expect to encounter. Historical explanations proposed for the monk and children remain unproven.
