Wardsend Cemetery is linked to a later legend about the ghost of a boy whose body was supposedly stolen in 1862. The history is more complicated. Coffins and remains discovered at the site triggered a riot and accusations of body snatching, but the central accusations were not proved; the cemetery authorities were instead prosecuted over grave reuse.
Because the ghost story appears to build a named victim from a scandal whose popular version is unreliable, this record is labelled disputed. The cemetery’s documented history-including burials connected with the Great Sheffield Flood-is compelling without exaggeration.
Wardsend is a heritage cemetery beside an active railway. Use lawful access and never cross or walk along the railway line.
