MHCLG homelessness statistics

Homelessness in Sheffield

Every council reports the households that come to it for homelessness help. These are the Sheffield figures as the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government publishes them: counts of households for the city as a whole, about five months after each quarter ends, with a one-night count of people sleeping rough each autumn. They describe the city, not any person.

Where households in temporary accommodation were staying at 31 Mar 2026

  • Council or housing association homes471 households, 296 with children
  • Bed and breakfast hotels160 households, 22 with children
  • Nightly paid, privately managed self-contained accommodation47 households, 35 with children
  • Private sector accommodation leased by the council1 household
  • Owed a duty by Sheffield but housed by another councilSuppressed by the publisher because the number is small
  • Owed a duty, no accommodation secured yet19 households, 10 with children

Plain words for the terms: a household is "assessed" when the council looks at its situation after it asks for help. A "prevention duty" is owed when a household is likely to lose its home within 56 days and the council must try to stop that; a "relief duty" is owed when a household is already homeless and the council must help it find somewhere. "Temporary accommodation" is somewhere the council has arranged while it works out or carries out its duty. The rough sleeping snapshot is a count or estimate of people sleeping outside, in tents, doorways, cars or stations on one night in autumn; it is not everyone who slept rough during the year. A figure marked suppressed was withheld by the publisher because it is small enough to identify people.

If you are homeless or at risk of losing your home in Sheffield, the council's Housing Solutions service is where to go first: Homelessness help from Sheffield City Council. Shelters, food banks and advice centres in the city are listed on this page.

NHS England monthly A&E SitRep

How busy are Sheffield's A&Es

Figures for September 2026, the latest month NHS England has published, for Sheffield's two NHS trusts. They are published per trust, not per hospital, so Sheffield Teaching Hospitals covers the Northern General's emergency department together with its single-specialty and urgent care services.

Type 1 is a consultant-led, 24-hour emergency department with full resuscitation facilities: the Northern General and the Children's Hospital. Type 3 covers urgent treatment centres, minor injury units and walk-in centres, where most people are seen within four hours. The all-types four-hour figure the news quotes mixes the two, so the type 1 share here is lower than the headline. Trolley waits count patients a doctor has decided to admit who then waited for a bed.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Northern General, the Royal Hallamshire and the city's other adult hospitals, is missing from these figures: it has not submitted waiting times data since June 2025. NHS England estimates 91,256 people waiting there when it adds the missing trusts to the England total, so the Sheffield figures above leave out most of the city's waiting list.

These are the published waiting list statistics, not a forecast for anyone's own wait. Your GP or the hospital can tell you about yours, and NHS 111 can help if your condition gets worse while you wait.
