If Kelham Island is the Sheffield neighbourhood that gets the headlines, Abbeydale Road and Sharrow Vale are where a lot of locals would rather spend a Saturday. Running south-west out of town, this stretch has quietly become the city’s indie mile: antiques warehouses, record shops, international grocers, some of the best cafés in Sheffield and a strip of independents on Sharrow Vale Road that feels like a village high street that took a wrong turn and thrived. Abbeydale Road: the treasure-hunting end

Abbeydale Road is long, scruffy in places and all the better for it. The antiques and vintage shops are the anchor: proper rummage territory where an hour disappears and you leave with a lamp you didn’t know you needed. In between sit international supermarkets that make it one of the best food-shopping streets in the city, indie coffee spots, and the Abbeydale Picture House, a gorgeous old cinema that now hosts events, markets and gigs. When something’s on there it’s usually worth your evening; it’ll be in the weekend listings when it is.

Sharrow Vale: the village bit

Cut down towards Hunters Bar and you hit Sharrow Vale Road, which packs butchers, bakers, fishmongers, gift shops and cafés into a few hundred yards of proper independents. It’s also home to Pete McKee’s gallery, and his paintings of Sheffield life make a lot more sense once you’ve spent a morning on this street watching it happen around you. Fuel stops

This corner of Sheffield takes eating seriously without making a fuss about it. Cafés along both roads do the kind of breakfasts that end plans for the rest of the morning, and by evening the restaurant stock along Abbeydale Road, from long-standing curry houses to newer arrivals, holds its own against anywhere in the city. Nobody here is chasing a trend; most of these places predate the trend and will outlive it.

Green edges

You’re never far from a park: Endcliffe Park bookends Sharrow Vale at Hunters Bar, and the General Cemetery, a Victorian garden cemetery turned nature walk, sits just off the bottom of the road and is one of the most atmospheric free wanders in Sheffield. Both feature in the free things guide.
