NovaCity Barnsley opened in 2017 in a building on Peel Parade that had stood empty for more than 20 years. Run by the same not-for-profit as Nova City Rotherham, it focuses more on free-play open sessions than structured lessons, and is home to Nova Arts, NovaCity’s post-16 performing arts college.
The building has a bespoke parkour park, a spring floor, a dance studio, a trampoline park and a soft play area, plus an on-site cafe.
Open sessions, seven days a week
Book one or two hours and use all the facilities (unless a class is on), with staff on hand to guide you and keep you safe. Open to all ages and abilities; children aged 5 and under need a parent with them at all times. Sessions run on weekday evenings and through the day at weekends and in school holidays. A Barnsley-only membership (£25 a month) gives one open session of up to two hours every day.
Classes
- Parkour: Monday evenings for ages 6 to 10 and 6 to 16, plus Wednesday fundamentals for 6 to 10s.
- Nova Ninjas and Tricks and Flips in the week and on Saturdays.
- Parent and Toddler on Saturday mornings (only at Barnsley), and a SEND session on Sunday mornings.
Parties
Barnsley is NovaCity’s main party venue: two hours on the parkour park and trampolines, supervised by staff, with food (pizza, chips, chicken nuggets and ice cream) and juice. £15 a head Monday to Thursday or £17 Friday to Sunday, for at least 10 people, booked at least two weeks ahead. Grip socks are £2.50 at reception if you do not bring your own.
Booking
Book through the NovaCity app (App Store or Google Play) or sign up at reception. NovaCity memberships work at both venues (see Nova City Rotherham). Phone 01226 102059 or email [email protected].
Linked with Sheffield Parkour
NovaCity’s parkour classes are linked with Sheffield Parkour, the city’s free outdoor parkour community, which has trained together since 2005 and meets on Thursdays at 6pm in Endcliffe Park. See Sheffield Parkour & Freerunning.
