Sheffield nightlife doesn’t do one thing, it does about six, and they barely overlap. There’s the West Street run, the Division Street indie bars, real ale in Kelham, club nights that have outlived every trend, karaoke, drag cabaret, jazz in a pub back room and gigs seven nights a week. Pick your strip

West Street is the loud one: bars stacked shoulder to shoulder, at its best when you stop fighting it and join in. Division Street and Devonshire Green next door skew indie, with better beer and conversation you can actually hear. And then there’s Kelham and Neepsend, which turned into the connoisseur’s night out somewhere along the way: proper pubs, taprooms and food that’s worth being sober for at least at the start (the Kelham guide has the full crawl).

The live layer

What separates a Sheffield night out from most cities is how easily it collides with live music. Sidney & Matilda alone has something on most nights, Corporation covers the rock and metal end into the small hours, and the venues guide maps the rest. The weird and wonderful end

The best nights in this city are the ones the big listings sites never hear about: alt-drag cabaret at The Lughole, karaoke chaos at Cosy Joes on West Street, jazz that draws national names to the back room of The Lescar, soul weekenders at Crookes Social Club. Late, later, latest

Sheffield’s club scene is smaller than it was in its legendary days but it’s loyal, and the nights that survived did so because they’re good. Getting home

Practical note from experience: the night buses are patchy, taxis cluster around the stations and West Street, and if you’re out in Kelham the walk back to town along the river is twenty minutes and genuinely lovely at 1am in summer. Plan the last leg before the third pint and future-you will be grateful.
