Sheffield might be the easiest city in the country to entertain kids in, mostly because so much of the good stuff is free and outdoors. Between the parks with animal farms, museums built for small hands, a duck-feeding walk that ends at an ice cream hatch and the Peak District half an hour from your door, you can do a different day out every weekend for a year. The classic: Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam

The walk every Sheffield family knows by heart. Start at Endcliffe Park with the playground and the ducks, follow the Porter Brook up through the woods, and finish at Forge Dam where the café and the ice creams live. Flat enough for scooters, wild enough to feel like an adventure, and it costs nothing unless the ice cream hatch wins, which it will.

Parks with added animals

Graves Park has a proper animal farm inside it, free to visit, with rare breeds the kids can get close to. Heeley City Farm does the same trick nearer town. Norfolk Heritage Park adds the best view of the city centre, and Weston Park pairs its playground with a free museum next door. There’s a fuller run-down in the best parks post.

Museums that don’t do ‘don’t touch’

Weston Park Museum is genuinely built for children: free entry, hands-on galleries and enough to fill a wet afternoon twice over. The Kelham Island Museum is the one for slightly older kids: real machines, real scale, and the River Don Engine running in steam on event days is the loudest history lesson in Yorkshire.

When the weather turns

Rainy options deserve their own post and they’ve got one, but the short list is the Winter Garden (free, warm, full of odd plants), the Millennium Gallery next door, and swimming at Ponds Forge, which remains the biggest treat in town for anyone under ten.

The proper day out

When you want the full expedition, the Peak District is on the bus routes. Padley Gorge is the family favourite: paddling, boulders, woods that look borrowed from a storybook. And closer to home, a Sunday morning at Oldcotes car boot with a pound of pocket money is a lesson in negotiation no school teaches.
