Out of This World takes over Sheffield city centre on Sunday 25 October, 10.30am to 5.30pm. Entry is free. The council’s programme spreads sci-fi, comics, gaming, magic and Halloween activity between the Winter Garden, Tudor Square, the Town Hall, Millennium Square, the Peace Gardens and nearby streets. You can make a good day of it without buying a ticket, although rides, food and stalls may cost extra. Start with the official event page and its map before setting off.
Pick one zone first
The tempting approach is to try to see everything. In a busy city centre that becomes a march between queues. If you are going with children, agree on one must-see zone and let the rest be a bonus. The sci-fi, comic and gaming areas cover the Winter Garden, Tudor Square, the Town Hall and the Peace Gardens. Expect costumed characters, comic artists, displays and retro gaming. Fancy dress is welcome, but nobody needs to dress up to take part.
The magic and illusion activity is around Millennium Square, the Town Hall and Peace Gardens. The published programme names street performances and workshops, including some free ticketed magic sessions. For those, the council says to collect a ticket from the steward in front of the Town Hall. Free entry to the wider event does not guarantee a workshop place, so make that your first stop if it is the main reason you are going.
A Halloween route without the big spend
The Halloween zone runs through Town Hall Square, the Peace Gardens, Pinstone Street and Fargate. It mixes roaming characters with attractions and stalls. Some of the best bits are simply the people and performances you meet while walking between spaces. Take a drink and a snack if you are watching the budget, then choose deliberately whether a ride or street-food stop is worth paying for.
For younger children who dislike loud surprises, begin in the Winter Garden or a calmer indoor stop and decide how much of the street programme they enjoy. The council’s descriptions include fire, sideshow acts, snakes and spooky characters. That is a useful heads-up, not a reason to miss the whole event. Ask stewards where the quieter routes are on the day.
Getting into town and home again
Most of the event is walkable from Sheffield station and the city-centre tram stops. The areas are close together on a map, but queues and crowds slow the journey. Leave space between a timed activity and any other booking. If you are bringing a buggy or need a step-free route, use the official map and speak to stewards about temporary barriers rather than assuming every usual crossing is open.
Sunday public transport and parking can differ from a weekday trip. Check the journey home before you leave, especially if you plan to stay until the 5.30pm finish. Sheffield weather can change quickly in October, and several zones are outdoors. A coat you can carry beats a plan that depends on staying dry.
Make it part of a Sheffield Sunday
Out of This World is a one-day event. For a longer Halloween plan, our Halloween guide brings together family events, nights out and the live listings. The what's on calendar is useful if you want to add an exhibition or a film after the street event. Check each venue’s own booking page before making a second plan.
The official event page is the source for this article’s times, zones and activities. Programmes and access arrangements can change at short notice. Have one highlight in mind, use the city as the setting, and leave room to find something you did not expect.
